Bobby’s Story

Bobby

Bobby is a five-year-old boy who was born with Treacher Collins Syndrome, a rare and complex genetic condition that effects the development of various parts of the head and face. Treacher Collins usually includes slanting eyes and notched lower lids, a small jaw, malformed ears, hearing loss and a cleft palate.

When Bobby was just two weeks old, he had a tracheotomy to create an airway in his windpipe to help him breathe. He also had a G-tube inserted in his stomach so that he could get the proper nutrition to help him grow.

To date Bobby has had two major jaw distractions and a cleft palate repair and will continue to have facial reconstruction into his teen years.  After 11 surgeries Bobby is now trache free and in kindergarten.  Bobby’s parents consider Dr. Joseph McCarthy and the entire Team at the IRPS to be part of their family.  Over the last four years Bobby has grown into a confident, smart and funny toddler who loves to take pictures, ride roller coasters and travel.

If there is any advice we could pass along to others it would be to continue on the journey you had always planned for your child as if there was no “difference” at all. With Bobby’s syndrome we couldn’t see our future as far as we wanted to, but now we know that there are NO limits.” -Kelly & James
