Public Health Study

The NFFR is the Lead Organization on a multi-year national study with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) initiated in response to the lack of statistical, epidemiological and demographical information on children with facial malformations. Based on the clinical observations of the issues of children at the Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery (IRPS) that the NFFR founded and supports, the NFFR, through the direct advocacy of Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa, was granted funding in September, 2004 to partner with the CDC and Public Health centers around the country to conduct a study of children born with Cleft Lip and/or Palate, Microtia and Craniosynostosis between 1998 and 2003 that collected data on access to and quality of treatment, referral patterns, insurance coverage, co-morbidities and quality of life in the hope of improving services and access to services nationwide for all children with craniofacial malformations.
