The Next Century of Changing Faces and Transforming Lives Campaign
A quarter of a million children are born with facial differences every year in America, many of them without access to comprehensive team care. These are the children the National Foundation for Facial Reconstruction was founded to help.
The Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery is the pre-eminent facial reconstruction facility with 53 medical professionals treating patients in 11 clinics. The Institute treats every congenital and acquired facial anomaly, providing a panoply of medical and psychosocial services to approximately 2,000 patients a year, with the number of patients continuing to increase. NFFR’s support of the Institute, together with the donation of pro bono surgical services by Institute doctors for all in-need patients, assures every child access to quality reconstructive treatment.
Funds raised through The Next Century of Changing Faces and Transforming Lives campaign will ensure that the Institute will be able to treat the ever-increasing number of patients and expand the scope of its services. The $8 million raised in the campaign will be used for three purposes.
First, NFFR will use $4.5 million to fund, in partnership with NYU, the purchase and construction of a new, state-of-the art facility for the Institute, one-half block from NYU Langone Medical Center. The new facility will increase the Institute’s space from 3,400 to 14,255 square feet, allowing it to meet the needs of its increasing patient population while reaching out to adults suffering from facial difference. The facility will include:
A conference center for multidisciplinary team meetings with patients and families, which is twice the size of the current one;- Three examination rooms, making it possible to work with three separate patients and their families at a time;
- An enlarged orthodontic suite with three additional treatment rooms and six chairs, as well as a research laboratory;

- Three rooms for the Newman Family Support Center, with much-needed private space for psychological, social, and genetic counseling and speech evaluation and therapy;
- A patient waiting room with a pediatric play area and education alcove, making waiting time more pleasant;
- A multimedia imaging center with the latest technology,
including the cephalostat and a 3D camera in one large machine, a changing room for patients, and a larger X-ray room; - Rooms for surgical planning, coordinators, a nurse practitioner, and fellows, bringing all the Institute team under one roof and enhancing coordination;
- A ground floor with offices for eight faculty practice reconstructive doctors, two operating rooms, seven examination rooms, and a waiting room, bringing the specialists in close proximity to the Institute’s patients for consultation on a moment’s notice.
Second, $2.5 million will support an endowed Professorship of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery at NYU Medical School named in honor of Dr. Joseph McCarthy, the Institute’s director since 1981.
Third, the balance will enhance NFFR’s endowment, enabling NFFR to ensure that children and adults with facial differences continue to have access to cutting-edge, personalized, and comprehensive team care, regardless of the severity of the condition, the length of the treatment, or the financial means of the family.
