New Family Programs!
As a part of the Newman Family Support Center, the NFFR now offers programs for patients and their families to gather, socialize and support one another. Excellent surgical outcomes alone are not enough for children with facial differences. Each individual needs to develop a healthy self-image and the confidence to pursue a full and rewarding life. “Family Program events are a great opportunity to connect with other families, and to engage in dialogue about the psychosocial implications of having a facial difference. The NFFR provides a safe and welcoming environment to our patients and families.” Sally Klein, IRPS Social Worker.
One program the NFFR now offers is quarterly Pizza Meets for patients and families of the IRPS. Each Pizza Meet is held at the NFFR offices and has a topic which the Newman Psychosocial team speaks about. For the Fall Pizza Meet in October, families enjoyed pizza, music, games for the kids and the team spoke about siblings and how having a child with a facial difference affects this dynamic. “The Pizza Meets provide a casual and relaxed setting to meet other families and network; an opportunity to speak with staff members; and most importantly, a chance to share information and ideas, and learn from others about their experiences with facial difference.” Aileen Blitz, PhD, Clinical Psychologist.
This past Sunday, December 4ththe NFFR hosted its first Family Holiday Party. Over 150 children, parents and staff gathered at St. Vartans church for this festive event to celebrate the season. There was fun for the whole family including a holiday buffet, clowns, magicians, face painting, balloon animals and amazing raffle prizes.
The party culminated with a visit from Santa Claus and photo for each family as well as each child receiving a gift. The joy on each child’s face is truly what this program is about and why the IRPS and NFFR exist.
Stay tuned for our Winter Pizza meet this coming February and more Newman Family Support Center events in the future.
